Goodwill of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey engaged Public Works to develop a strategic plan that would position the organization to effectively fulfill its mission while optimizing fiscal sustainability and operational efficiency.
After a century as a leading employment services provider for people with disabilities and as a social enterprise – through its thrift stores – Goodwill’s internal infrastructure and external offerings had grown disparate. We were tasked with assessing Goodwill’s many programs and assets for mission alignment, high performance, and opportunity.

Our Strategy
Public Works worked closely with stakeholders at the staff, executive, and board levels to assess the current state of the organization and identify opportunities.
Based on the findings of our current state assessment, we developed a strategic plan and implementation strategy that harnessed the organization’s strengths to advance its mission in a sustainable way. In tandem with the plan, we created a robust set of metrics to enable Goodwill to measure progress toward their strategic objectives, and track organizational health and performance on an ongoing basis.

Impact
and Outcome
In June 2017, Goodwill publicly announced the development and implementation of their Vision 2020.
Vision 2020, a strategic plan based on our feedback, integrates Goodwill’s mission throughout their operations, presents a plan to keep the organization financially healthy, and positions them to provide a higher quality of service.
