Building Skills New York

Sectors

Building Skills NY, a workforce development organization affiliated with the affordable housing and real estate industries, approached Public Works for support as they sought to scale their program offerings.

Building Skills NY works to connect low-income New Yorkers to construction projects through targeted recruitment and training. With support from the Robin Hood Foundation and the Real Estate Board of New York, BSNY was ready to expand their efforts to connect low-income New Yorkers to local construction jobs. That’s where Public Works came in.

Our Strategy

Public Works analyzed existing program models and new grant requirements to help BSNY scale operations to connect more New Yorkers to local construction jobs.

We then created new tools, organizational structure, and standard operating procedures to make sure BSNY had the right resources and staff to support its growth. Finally, we developed an IT infrastructure to track job seekers and available jobs at construction sites.

Impact
and Outcome

Public Works developed a re-designed service and organizational model that supports the sustainable growth of the organization.

The services and organizational model was complemented by a new customer relationship database (CRM) that enables staff to better match qualified candidates with the right job openings. This tool ensured BSNY could effectively serve both jobseekers and construction companies with openings as the program continues to grow.
