How can the City’s FY 2021 budget shape recovery?

New York City is at a crossroads. The convergence of a public health crisis, an economic crisis of as yet unknown proportion, and a long-overdue national awakening to the reach and impact of systemic racism has led to unprecedented scrutiny of the allocation of City resources. In this time of heightened need and awareness, the New York City budget should reflect the City’s unique position as a global leader and changemaker. Fulfilling this role will require a budget that actively leverages the City’s resources and populations to create a framework for a lasting, equitable recovery.

This month we spoke with the Lower East Side Employment Network (LESEN) about their trajectory from a loose coalition of neighborhood workforce development providers to the local hiring entity for Community Board 3. While their role has evolved significantly since their founding, the last few months have presented brand new challenges; “we’re just trying to figure out how a central entity membership program can be of the most support to our members,” Gaspar Caro, LESEN’s Partnership Director said.

Earlier this month, Public Works Partners brought together Schillivia Baptiste of Laland Baptiste, Michael Crowley of LaPlaca Cohen, Sunil Narayan of Urbane Development, and Jeanette Nigro of Perch Advisors for a virtual panel discussion to  examine efforts to respond to the COVID-19 crisis. We discussed the impact of the pandemic on small firms, hopes and expectations for recovery, and how firm culture has adapted to continue to meet the needs of staff and clients.
