Grow Brooklyn, a community-based nonprofit providing free financial and legal services to New Yorkers, had steadily expanded since its 2007 founding, adding legal services in 2015, financial coaching in 2016, and senior services in 2020.
Having weathered the challenges the COVID-19 pandemic posed to nonprofits nationwide, Grow Brooklyn was ready to enter its next phase of growth as a community-based organization focused on financial and economic empowerment. The organization needed a comprehensive, four-year strategic plan to guide that growth, one that would strengthen organizational alignment, expand its impact, and give leadership a mission-aligned, actionable roadmap for the years ahead that meets the needs of the communities they serve.

The organization needed a comprehensive, four-year strategic plan to guide that growth, one that would strengthen organizational alignment, expand its impact, and give leadership a mission-aligned, actionable roadmap for the years ahead that meets the needs of the communities they serve.
Our Strategy
Public Works Partners began with a thorough current-state assessment, conducting interviews with staff, Board members, and funders, alongside comprehensive financial analysis and benchmarking against peer organizations.
Through a comprehensive review of mission and vision alignment, external and internal factors, organizational culture, and existing programming, this process identified key opportunities to enhance program delivery, build organizational capacity, strengthen financial sustainability, and sharpen Grow Brooklyn’s strategic positioning to advance its long-term goals. Building on these findings, Public Works facilitated a half-day board retreat and a series of collaborative working sessions to align leadership around a shared vision, establish three clear organizational goals, and prioritize phased initiatives.
Impact
and Outcome
The engagement delivered a final Strategic Plan that gives Grow Brooklyn a practical, evidence-based roadmap for growth over the next four years, including implementation timelines, performance tracking recommendations, and operational strategies for workload management and resource allocation.
By grounding the plan in staff, Board, and funder input alongside peer benchmarking, Public Works ensured the goals and initiatives are both ambitious and realistic. The plan positions Grow Brooklyn’s leadership with a shared vision and a clear set of priorities to guide long-term organizational development, strengthening its capacity to serve historically underserved and low-income communities across Central Brooklyn and beyond.
