The highly visible proposal had attracted the attention of the local Council Member, who requested that any public events be accessible to community members that are traditionally excluded from similar planning processes. To respond to this request, Public Works arranged for the three events to be held on weekdays and a weekend in in-person and virtual formats. Public Works also arranged for all three public events to provide live interpretation services in Spanish, Mandarin, Bengali, Greek, and American Sign Language (ASL) and for both community workshops to provide TypeWell speech-to-text transcription services.
Collectively, the three events had over 200 attendees and resulted in the collection of over 200 comments and questions from participants, which Public Works synthesized into a set of summary recommendations to help guide the project team as their project underwent the City’s Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP). The project was ultimately approved with a commitment to pricing nearly half of the proposed apartments below market rate.
