Governor Kathy Hochul and NYSERDA announced The Bronx is Breathing: Reimagining a Cleaner Hunts Point as a $10 million winner of the New York Clean Neighborhoods Challenge. The challenge is part of the New York Clean Transportation Prizes, a set of three initiatives that grants funding to select projects advancing solutions that reduce air pollution, enhance electrification, and grow mobility options in underserved communities across the state. Under the leadership of Volvo Technology of America, The Bronx is Breathing will bring accessible and affordable clean transportation solutions to Hunts Point, the home of the nation’s largest wholesale food hub, nine waste transfer facilities, a wastewater treatment facility, and a residential community of 13,000. The Public Works team is proud to support Volvo and its partners in pioneering equitable and sustainable innovations in clean transportation in Hunts Point. Stay tuned for further updates about our work!

What We’re Doing

Meet our newest teammates

Public Works welcomes David Fischer and Sydney Roessler to the team! David is a longtime friend and collaborator of Public Works and founder of Altior Policy.  He joins our firm as an Advisor, leveraging his education and workforce expertise to support our client engagements.

Sydney joins us as a Project Coordinator to enhance our design chops by leveraging her background in UX, product design, and design research. She is passionate about using her design skills as a catalyst for social change.

We’re excited to have them on our team–please join us in welcoming them!

Tis’ the season to give back

Our firm has a longstanding commitment to supporting mission-driven organizations, and our fourth annual #PublicWorksGivesBack Campaign, reaffirms this commitment.

Through our staff-led initiative, each member of our team will donate to a nonprofit of their choice, and Public Works Partners will match that donation. Not only is this a great way to give back but it’s also a perfect opportunity to showcase the causes that our team is passionate about. Since beginning this tradition, we’ve given to over 30 organizations. In addition, we also make donations in honor of our clients’ amazing work. From now until the end of this year, keep an eye on our social media channels (@PublicWorksIQ) to see which organizations staff are donating to and the various ways these organizations are working to strengthen our communities. Follow along with the hashtag #PublicWorksGivesBack, and consider passing on the kindness by supporting a nonprofit that’s making a difference in your community.

What does it mean to be a responsible business?

The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not a new one, but it has evolved significantly in recent years. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and renewed calls for racial justice in the United States, many companies turned to their corporate social responsibility goals to better guide their business strategy, align the services they provide with their values, and even boost employee morale. While CSR initiatives are often thought of as side projects for large corporations, they can be powerful tools for businesses of all sizes. Check out Corporate Social Responsibility: Changing the Game for Businesses of All Sizes, where we unpack how CSR initiatives have adjusted to meet the needs of businesses and communities today and how these strategies can be put to use at businesses of any size, on the Public Works IQ.
